The Pirate Chase 10K on November 20, 2011 was only my second road race in Greenville, NC. My first was the Run For The Booty Half Marathon on October 11, 2009 where I placed 3rd overall with a 1:20:48. The Pirate Chase 10K is the only 10K road race in Greenville. I have always loved the 10K distance. I ran the Coastal 5K in Myrtle Beach, SC in 17:47 about a month before the Pirate Chase 10K. I felt that I could hold that 5K pace for another 2 miles then tough out the last mile or so. As a result my goal for the Pirate Chase 10K was to win and break 37 min or run in the low 37s.
It was a warm day for the Pirate Chase 10K. The race started at 1pm on a Sunday afternoon. The temperature was close to 75 degrees and a little windy at times. It was in the mid 40s when I ran the Coastal 5K a month before. I rather run in cold weather than warm and hot. There wasn't many clouds in the sky so the sun was beating down on us. My Dad and I arrived at the start in the Lyndale neighborhood around noon. I ate a power bar an hour before the start and talked with my girlfriend Jamie, who was running the 1 mile with Mica, a dog from the Pitt County Animal Shelter. I started some dynamic stretching about 30 minutes before the start then headed out for an easy 10 minute warmup jog with some surges. I drank my G Series Pro 01 prime pouch 15 minutes before the start.

The race field was small as we all lined up and got ready for the start. I lined up on the front with my friend Derek Hurdle. The gun went off and I was out fast. I felt good and had pulled away from the field as I went through the first mile in 5:53. I kept running hard and knew I was all alone already. Just the cop car leading me around the course. My second mile was a 5:59 so I tried to pick it back up but had to fight a strong head wind for miles 3 and 4. I ran those miles in 6:08 and 6:07. I was slowing down but still had a big lead. It's hard trying to go for a fast time when no one is there to push you but I kept digging until the wind and heat got to me and I pretty much cruised it in the last 2 miles.

I went on to win the 1st Pitt County Pirate Club Pirate Chase 10K in 39:09, 3:43 ahead of second place. It was my first win in Greenville so I was happy about that. I was disappointed in my time but it was hot and it was hard going for a fast time while running by yourself for the whole 10K. I cooled down with my G Series Pro 03 recovery drink. The course is dead flat, one of the flattest in Greenville, and fast but has a lot of turns. Overall the course would be great for a personal record on a cooler day or a morning race instead of middle of the day.
My girlfriend Jamie and her dog Mica got 2nd in the doggie race in the 1 mile. The 5Ks 4 K9s group that we are apart of had a lot of dogs at the race and one even got adopted there! This is the second race where volunteers have been able to run with shelter dogs. It helps get the animal shelter more publicity and gets the dogs seen by more people.
The post race festivities were nice. They had subs from Jimmy Johns. I got a very nice Subaru jacket as a door prize and a big Subaru gym bag for my overall win. The race was organized well by East Carolina Road Racing, ECRR, and the finish line frame was really nice. Kip Sloan took some great pictures and the Pitt County Pirate Club has a lot of pictures from the race on their facebook page.
